The Land of the Living

‘All my life – all your life – I’ve struggled with this: was what I did “wrong”?’

The Land of the Living is a powerful historical drama set in Germany in 1945, in the immediate aftermath of the Second World War. Thomas, one of thousands of children stolen by the Nazis from Eastern Europe during World War 2, is under the care of Ruth, a UN relief worker. Should she try to find his parents or leave him with those he’s grown up with? The choice she makes will shape his life.

Juliet Stevenson features as Ruth in this remarkable and timely new play by David Lan, former Artistic Director of the Young Vic. Immersed in the shapeshifting nature of memory and morality, the production is directed by Stephen Daldry (The Jungle, The Inheritance).

While the characters in the play are fictional, the historical circumstances are drawn from real events. The play was informed by a series of in-depth interviews with the distinguished journalist and historian Gitta Sereny, who worked for UNRRA in southern Germany immediately after the end of the war and wrote extensively about the period.

For 60 years, Queen Elizabeth II met with each of her 12 prime ministers in a private weekly meeting known as The Audience. From Winston Churchill to Margaret Thatcher and David Cameron, the Queen advised her prime ministers on matters both public and personal. Through these meetings, we see glimpses of the woman behind the crown and witness the moments that shaped a monarch.

Peter Morgan’s global hit The Crown was based on this critically acclaimed play, filmed live from London’s West End for National Theatre Live in 2013.

The Father and the Assassin

This gripping play traces Godse’s life over 30 years during India’s fight for independence: from a devout follower of Gandhi, through to his radicalisation and their tragic final encounter in Delhi in 1948.

Director Indhu Rubasingham (Kerry Jackson, The Great Wave) reunites with Anupama Chandrasekhar, one of India’s most exciting playwrights, for this essential exploration of oppression and extremism, featuring Olivier Award-winner Hiran Abeysekera (Life of Pi) as Nathuram Godse with Paul Bazely (Cruella) as Mahatma Gandhi.
