Coping with the loss of a loved one can be incredibly painful. It takes time to understand your feelings and adjust to what had happened. Your loss will always be a part of you and there may be times when you struggle with your feelings of sorrow.

The bereavement group is a small group of men and women who meet in a private house where we provide help by granting each other permission to talk in a safe, caring and friendly environment thereby enabling us to open up about our feelings without being judged. An integral part of creating this safe space is the group’s agreement not to repeat the very personal thoughts that are voiced in our meetings to anyone who wasn’t at the meeting.

Sometimes we have to talk about the things that make us sad. Because the next time we talk about these sad things they won’t be as sad. Each time we talk about them they become a little less sad until we begin to remember the good things and accept the sad things

Some members comments:

  • Half an hour into my first meeting I decided I was not going to come again but by the end I was glad I came and will continue to attend these meetings.
  • The group definitely helped me as I have slept better since attending
  • The bereavement group picks me up and helps me face the world.
  • I felt a calmness on returning home for which I am so thankful.

The Bereavement group meets fortnightly on a Tuesday afternoon in private homes.  We do not have a rigid format to the meetings which allows them to go wherever the members take them. Sometimes people want to talk and sometimes they just need to listen to others experiences.
